Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI) Reporting Fellowship 2026–2028

    Deadline: February 28, 2026

The Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI) Reporting Fellowship 2026–2028 is a fully funded, two-year professional journalism fellowship based in Washington, D.C., designed to train and support the next generation of public‑service reporters. The programme combines rigorous classroom instruction with hands‑on newsroom experience, preparing fellows to cover politics, policy, and government with depth, accuracy, and integrity.

The Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI) Reporting Fellowship 2026–2028 is ideal for individuals passionate about journalism’s role in democracy, whether or not they have prior newsroom experience.

    About the Fellowship

The fellowship runs for two years and blends structured learning with real‑world reporting. Fellows begin with an intensive training phase and then transition into active reporting roles, working closely with experienced editors and journalists.

The programme is hosted by the Allbritton Journalism Institute (AJI), a non‑profit organisation committed to strengthening journalism by investing in early‑career reporters.

    Fellowship Structure and Training

    Intensive Immersion Course

The fellowship begins with a four‑week immersive course that introduces fellows to the core principles and practices of journalism. Training areas include:

    • Journalism ethics and standards
    • Reporting and interviewing techniques
    • News writing and storytelling
    • Audience engagement and distribution

This foundational period is designed to ensure all fellows, regardless of background, start with a strong and shared understanding of professional journalism.

    Newsroom Experience

After the immersion phase, fellows join NOTUS, AJI’s partner newsroom, as paid reporters. While continuing coursework and seminars, fellows will:

    • Report on U.S. politics, policy, and government
    • Pitch, research, write, and publish original stories
    • Receive regular feedback and mentorship from editors
    • Participate in group critiques and professional development sessions

Following 18 months of structured training, fellows may remain with the programme for an additional six months, during which AJI supports career placement and next‑step opportunities.

    Financial Support and Benefits

The fellowship is fully paid and offers competitive benefits, including:

    • Annual salary of $60,000 USD, paid by NOTUS
    • Health insurance and standard employment benefits
    • $1,500 relocation assistance to support moving to the Washington, D.C. area
