    OAR Applied Research Competition 2026

    Deadline: March 16, 2026

The OAR Applied Research Competition 2026 is now open for applications. This prestigious program by the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) provides funding for applied research projects that advance evidence-based practices and practical outcomes for the autism community. Researchers across the globe are invited to submit proposals for innovative projects that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with autism and their families.

About the OAR Applied Research Competition 2026

The OAR Applied Research Competition 2026 focuses on supporting studies that produce practical, applicable results for the autism community. The initiative emphasizes applied research — studies that have a direct impact on education, employment, social interaction, and daily living outcomes for people with autism.

OAR is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum by funding rigorous research that bridges the gap between science and practice. This competition offers researchers the opportunity to contribute significantly to autism research while addressing real-world challenges.

    Funding Information

Successful applicants will receive up to $50,000 per project in grant funding. Projects typically span one to two years, depending on scope and design. The funding is intended to support research activities that lead to measurable outcomes and community impact.

    Focus Areas

The competition prioritizes research that addresses real-life applications and supports individuals with autism and their families. Key areas of interest include:

    • Evaluation or comparison of assessment and intervention models
    • Educational, behavioral, or social communication interventions
    • Supports for adults with autism (employment, residential living, and community inclusion)
    • Family and caregiver support
    • Integration of technology in intervention and assessment

    Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to researchers worldwide. Applicants must be affiliated with a recognized research institution or organization.
At least one member of the research team must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and serve in a position that allows independent research (e.g., faculty member or principal investigator).

    Application Process

The application process is divided into two main stages:

    1. Letter of Intent (LOI):
Applicants must first submit a Letter of Intent outlining the project’s objectives, significance, and methods. Only applicants with accepted LOIs will be invited to submit a full proposal.
    2. Full Proposal:
Selected applicants will then provide a detailed research proposal, including methodology, budget, and expected impact. Final evaluations are conducted by OAR’s Scientific Council and Board of Directors.

    Evaluation Criteria

All submissions will be assessed based on the following:

    • Significance and practical relevance of the research
    • Strength and clarity of the research design and approach
    • Innovation and potential to advance autism understanding or intervention
    • Qualifications and experience of the research team
    • Feasibility of the proposed project and research environment

    Important Dates

    • Letter of Intent (LOI) Deadline: March 16, 2026 (11:59 PM EST)
    • Full Proposal Deadline (by invitation): July 13, 2026
    • Grant Awards Announcement: December 2026
    • Funding Commences: January 1, 2027

Why Apply for the OAR Applied Research Competition 2026

This competition presents a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to applied autism research and make a tangible difference. With funding of up to $50,000 and an emphasis on practical impact, OAR supports projects that not only advance knowledge but also empower individuals with autism, their families, and support networks.
