About the PROPEL Program
PROPEL (Promoting Research Opportunities in Engineering Labs) is an eight‑week, residential summer research programme that immerses undergraduate students in hands‑on engineering research. Participants work closely with Johns Hopkins faculty mentors in cutting‑edge laboratories while developing critical academic and professional skills required for graduate school success.
The programme combines rigorous research training with structured professional development, community building, and exposure to academic career pathways in engineering.
Programme Duration
- Programme Dates: 27 May – 24 July 2026
- Duration: 8 weeks (full‑time, residential)
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be currently enrolled as a full‑time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent
- Have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate study and have at least one semester remaining after the programme
- Priority is given to rising juniors and seniors
- Demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in engineering
- Be 18 years or older at the time of participation
- Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students on F‑1 visas currently studying in the U.S.
Research and Learning Experience
Participants in the PROPEL Program will:
- Engage in faculty‑mentored research projects within Johns Hopkins engineering laboratories
- Gain hands‑on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific problem‑solving
- Participate in weekly seminars and workshops focused on research skills and academic development
- Build meaningful relationships with faculty, graduate students, and peers
- Present their research findings at a final symposium at the conclusion of the programme
Professional Development & Enrichment Activities
The programme also includes:
- Workshops on scientific writing, research presentations, and graduate school preparation
- Training on professional communication and networking
