    PROPEL Program at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering 2026

    The PROPEL Program at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering 2026 is a fully funded, highly competitive summer research programme designed to prepare talented undergraduate students for advanced study and research careers in engineering. Hosted by the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, this programme provides intensive research exposure, professional development, and mentorship in a world‑class academic environment.

    The PROPEL Program at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering 2026 is particularly focused on supporting students from under‑resourced backgrounds or institutions with limited access to research opportunities, while building a strong pathway to PhD‑level engineering study.


    About the PROPEL Program

    PROPEL (Promoting Research Opportunities in Engineering Labs) is an eight‑week, residential summer research programme that immerses undergraduate students in hands‑on engineering research. Participants work closely with Johns Hopkins faculty mentors in cutting‑edge laboratories while developing critical academic and professional skills required for graduate school success.

    The programme combines rigorous research training with structured professional development, community building, and exposure to academic career pathways in engineering.


    Programme Duration

    • Programme Dates: 27 May – 24 July 2026
    • Duration: 8 weeks (full‑time, residential)

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

    • Be currently enrolled as a full‑time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories
    • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent
    • Have completed at least two semesters of undergraduate study and have at least one semester remaining after the programme
    • Priority is given to rising juniors and seniors
    • Demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in engineering
    • Be 18 years or older at the time of participation
    • Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students on F‑1 visas currently studying in the U.S.

    Research and Learning Experience

    Participants in the PROPEL Program will:

    • Engage in faculty‑mentored research projects within Johns Hopkins engineering laboratories
    • Gain hands‑on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific problem‑solving
    • Participate in weekly seminars and workshops focused on research skills and academic development
    • Build meaningful relationships with faculty, graduate students, and peers
    • Present their research findings at a final symposium at the conclusion of the programme

    Professional Development & Enrichment Activities

    The programme also includes:

    • Workshops on scientific writing, research presentations, and graduate school preparation
    • Training on professional communication and networking
    • Structured mentoring and advising sessions
    • Social and cohort‑building activities
    • Organised excursions to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

    Funding and Benefits

    The PROPEL Program at Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering 2026 is fully funded. Selected participants receive:

    • On‑campus housing for the full duration of the programme
    • Meals throughout the programme period
    • A competitive stipend to cover living expenses
    • Round‑trip travel support to and from Baltimore

    Application Requirements

    Applicants are required to submit the following materials:

    1. Completed online application form
    2. Research Statement (1 page): Outlining research interests, relevant experience, career goals, and alignment with the programme, including identification of 2–3 Johns Hopkins faculty whose research aligns with the applicant’s interests
    3. Leadership Statement (1 page): Describing leadership, service, or activities that address inclusion, equity, or disparities
    4. Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé
    5. Unofficial academic transcripts
    6. One letter of recommendation

    All application materials, including the recommendation letter, must be submitted by the stated deadline.
