The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowships 2026 is a prestigious research mobility and capacity-building programme designed to strengthen Africa’s next generation of scholars. The fellowship provides early-career African researchers with dedicated time, mentorship, and resources to conduct high-impact research at leading African research institutions.
The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowships 2026 supports scholars working within African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs), fostering collaboration, publication, and long-term academic growth.
About the Fellowship Programme
The fellowship is implemented by the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) with support from strategic partners committed to advancing research excellence across Africa.
The programme aims to:
- Strengthen the research capacity of early-career African scholars
- Promote research collaboration within Africa and globally
- Support high-quality, publishable research outputs
- Build sustainable academic and institutional research networks
Fellows are hosted at selected ARUA Centres of Excellence or Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence for an intensive research period.
Fellowship Duration
- Six (6) months of full-time, in-residence research at a host institution
- Fellows must be available to spend the entire fellowship period away from their home institution
Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be an African national
- Hold a PhD degree in a discipline relevant to an ARUA Centre of Excellence (CoE) or Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE)
- Be within five (5) years of completing their PhD
- Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application
- Be a young faculty member or researcher at an ARUA university
(In some cases, applicants from non-ARUA institutions may be considered) - Have an ongoing research project aligned with the selected CoE or CoRE
- Have data available to support the proposed research work
- Be willing and able to relocate for six months
- Female researchers are strongly encouraged to apply, with at least 70% of fellowships reserved for women
Financial Support and Benefits
Successful fellows will receive comprehensive support, including:
- Monthly stipend of USD 2,000
- Modest accommodation allowance
- Return airfare to and from the host institution
- Office space at the host Centre of Excellence or Cluster
- Additional support for eligible women, including childcare-related adjustments where applicable
- Access to research mentorship, workshops, and academic networks
Fellowship Responsibilities and Expectations
During the fellowship period, fellows are expected to:
- Conduct research under the guidance of senior academic mentors
- Produce at least one academic paper suitable for submission to a Scopus or Web of Science indexed journal, or an acceptable full manuscript draft
- Deliver a minimum of two academic presentations
- Participate in seminars, workshops, and collaborative research activities
- Contribute to building long-term research partnerships
- Support the dissemination of research findings within and beyond the host institution
Required Application Documents
Applicants must submit a complete application package through the official application portal, including:
- A cover letter explaining the relevance of the research and fellowship plans
- A detailed academic CV
- An institutional letter of support, confirming the applicant’s position and intent to return after the fellowship
- Evidence of PhD completion
- A research concept note (maximum of 1,500 words)
- Two academic writing samples (e.g., journal articles or working papers)
- A copy of the biodata page of a valid passport
