    UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2026

    The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2026 is a prestigious international award recognising individuals, organisations or institutions that have made an outstanding contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom worldwide, particularly under dangerous or challenging conditions.

    Established in 1997, this globally respected prize is awarded annually by UNESCO and remains one of the most significant honours dedicated to journalists and media organisations working to uphold freedom of expression.


    About the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2026

    The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2026 was created to honour the memory of Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in 1986 due to his courageous reporting and unwavering commitment to press freedom.

    The prize celebrates exceptional efforts to promote free, independent and pluralistic media, especially in contexts where journalists face threats, intimidation or repression.


    Prize Value and Award Ceremony

    • Prize amount: USD 25,000
    • Award ceremony: Presented annually on World Press Freedom Day (3 May)

    The award highlights the critical role of journalism in fostering democracy, accountability and human rights around the world.


    Who Can Be Recognised

    The prize may be awarded to:

    • Individuals
    • Institutions
    • Organisations
    • Other entities

    Eligible nominees must have made a significant and demonstrable contribution to the defence or promotion of press freedom, across all forms of media, including print, broadcast and digital platforms.


    Nomination Deadline for 2026

    • Application deadline: 15 February 2026

    All nominations must be submitted before the stated deadline to be considered for the 2026 award cycle.


    Who Can Submit a Nomination

    Nominations can only be submitted by:

    • UNESCO Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions
    • International or regional professional and non-governmental organisations active in journalism and freedom of expression

    ⚠️ Self-nominations are not accepted.


    Language and Submission Requirements

    • Nominations must be submitted in English or French
    • Each nomination must include:
      • A completed official nomination form
      • Supporting documentation detailing the nominee’s background
      • Clear evidence of the nominee’s contribution to press freedom

    All nominations are forwarded to the UNESCO Director-General by the authorised nominating bodies.
