The Royal Society Buchanan Medal 2026 is now open for nominations! This prestigious award recognizes exceptional contributions to the biomedical sciences and continues the Society’s long tradition of honoring excellence and innovation in research that advances human health.

About the Royal Society Buchanan Medal 2026

The Royal Society Buchanan Medal 2026 is one of the most distinguished biomedical science awards presented by the Royal Society. Established in 1897 in memory of the renowned physician George Buchanan FRS, the medal celebrates remarkable achievements that have significantly advanced the field of biomedical science.

This annual award highlights the Royal Society’s mission to promote excellence in science and to support scientists whose work has made an outstanding impact in understanding, treating, or preventing disease.

    Award Details

    • Award Type: Silver gilt medal
    • Prize Value: £2,000
    • Award Frequency: Annually
    • Discipline: Biomedical Sciences

The award honors individuals or teams whose research contributions have profoundly influenced the progress of biomedical knowledge and its applications to human health.

    Eligibility Criteria

The Buchanan Medal is open to:

There are no restrictions based on Royal Society fellowship status — nominations are welcome from both Fellows and non-Fellows alike.

    Past Recipients

Over the years, the Buchanan Medal has recognized leading figures in biomedical research. Notably, Sir Rory Edwards Collins received the 2025 Buchanan Medal for his outstanding contributions to cardiovascular clinical trials and for his role in the creation of the UK Biobank, a globally influential health research resource.

    • Announcement: Later in 2026 (date to be confirmed by the Royal Society)

    How to Nominate
