    DAAD Postdoctoral Fellows at SAIS

    The DAAD Postdoctoral Fellows at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University 2026–2027 programme offers an exceptional opportunity for early-career scholars to conduct advanced research at one of the world’s leading institutions for international studies. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), this prestigious fellowship supports postdoctoral research at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C.

    The DAAD Postdoctoral Fellows at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University 2026–2027 fellowship is hosted by the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs and focuses on critical global policy issues related to transatlantic relations and world order.


    Programme Overview

    The fellowship supports up to two postdoctoral fellows for a research stay of 9 to 12 months, taking place between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027.

    Fellows will be fully integrated into the academic life of SAIS, contributing to research, policy dialogue, and scholarly exchange within the Kissinger Center.

    Research Theme

    All proposed research must align with the central theme:

    “The United States, Europe, and World Order.”

    Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their research contributes to understanding transatlantic relations, global governance, international security, diplomacy, or related policy fields.


    Fellowship Benefits and Funding

    Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive funding package, including:

    • Monthly stipend of up to USD 6,000 (before U.S. taxes)
    • Dedicated workspace, computer access, and full use of Johns Hopkins University library resources
    • Research funding of up to USD 3,000 for a 12-month fellowship
    • Round-trip economy airfare to Washington, D.C. for non-U.S. citizens
    • Travel support to attend a relevant academic or policy conference in Germany
    • Basic health insurance coverage, with optional dependent coverage:
      • USD 560 per month for one dependent
      • USD 880 per month for more than one dependent

    Fellows are responsible for arranging and covering their own accommodation and living expenses while in Washington, D.C.


    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a completed PhD or be at the postdoctoral level with a strong research record
    • Demonstrate fluency in English
    • Be either:
      • A U.S. citizen, or
      • An EU citizen affiliated with a German university or research institution, and eligible for a J-1 visa
    • Preference is given to candidates who are within six years of completing their PhD, although more senior applicants may also be considered

    Duration and Location

    • Fellowship duration: 9–12 months
    • Host institution: School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University
    • Location: Washington, D.C., United States

    Application Requirements

    Applicants are required to submit:

    1. Statement of Interest
      Explaining motivation for applying, academic background, and how the fellowship supports long-term research goals.
    2. Research Proposal (3–5 pages)
      Clearly outlining the proposed research project and its relevance to the fellowship theme.
    3. Preferred Fellowship Dates
      Indicating availability within the period 1 July 2026 – 30 June 2027.
    4. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
      Detailing academic qualifications, publications, and relevant experience.
    5. Three Professional References
      Including full names and contact information.
