The CJF Black Journalism Fellowships 2026 offer an exceptional professional development opportunity for early-career Black journalists seeking to deepen their newsroom experience, strengthen their reporting skills, and contribute to more inclusive and representative journalism in Canada.

This prestigious fellowship programme is delivered by the Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and places successful fellows in leading Canadian media organisations for immersive, hands-on newsroom training.


About the CJF Black Journalism Fellowships 2026

The CJF Black Journalism Fellowships 2026 are designed to amplify Black voices in journalism, improve the quality of coverage of Black communities and issues, and support the next generation of Black media leaders.

Through structured mentorship and paid newsroom placements, fellows gain exposure to high-impact journalism while building professional networks within Canada’s top media institutions.


Fellowship Duration and Structure

  • Duration: Six (6) months
  • Programme Period: Approximately September 2025 to February 2026
  • Format: Full-time, in-person newsroom placements

Fellows are embedded within host organisations, working closely with experienced editors and journalists while contributing meaningfully to newsroom output.


Financial Support

  • Total Stipend: CAD $35,000
  • Payment Schedule: Paid in instalments, typically mid-month and end-of-month

Please note that fellows are responsible for their own relocation, accommodation, and personal living expenses.


Host News Organisations

Successful applicants will be placed with one of Canada’s leading journalism institutions, including:

  • CBC / Radio-Canada (English or French)
  • The Globe and Mail
  • CTV News
  • Investigative Journalism Bureau (IJB) at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health

Each placement offers a unique editorial focus and professional learning environment.

  • CJF – IJB Black Investigative Journalism Fellowship

  • CJF – CTV News Black Journalism Fellowship

Each stream is tailored to different journalism disciplines and newsroom priorities.


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CJF Black Journalism Fellowships 2026, applicants must:

  • Identify as Black
  • Have 1–5 years of professional journalism experience
  • Be based in Canada
  • Be available for a full-time, in-person six-month placement
  • Demonstrate strong interest in journalism, storytelling, and newsroom collaboration
