    IMPRS-SPCE Doctoral Program 2026

    The IMPRS-SPCE Doctoral Program 2026 is now open for applications, offering an exceptional opportunity for highly motivated graduates to pursue advanced doctoral training in economic sociology and political economy in Germany. This fully structured doctoral programme brings together leading scholars and institutions to explore the social and political constitution of modern economies.

    The IMPRS-SPCE Doctoral Program 2026 is internationally recognised for its rigorous research environment, interdisciplinary training, and strong academic mentorship.


    Programme Overview

    The International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) is Germany’s first doctoral programme dedicated specifically to economic sociology and political economy. The programme focuses on understanding how economic processes are embedded in social, political, and institutional contexts.

    Doctoral researchers are trained to analyse contemporary economic systems by examining the interaction between markets, states, organisations, and social actors.


    Hosting Institutions

    The programme is jointly offered by:

    • The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG)
    • The Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne
    • The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen

    In addition, selected candidates may be eligible for a cotutelle (joint doctoral degree) with Sciences Po in Paris.


    Research and Academic Training

    Doctoral candidates benefit from a structured and supportive research environment that includes:

    Degree Award

    Upon successful completion of the programme, doctoral degrees are awarded by either:

    • The University of Cologne, or
    • The University of Duisburg-Essen

    Candidates participating in a cotutelle arrangement may receive a joint doctorate in collaboration with an international partner institution.


    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a master’s degree or equivalent qualification with a minimum of 120 ECTS
    • Academic background in sociology, political science, economics, or a closely related discipline
    • Fulfil the doctoral admission requirements of the degree-awarding university
    • Demonstrate strong academic potential and research interest aligned with the programme’s thematic focus

    Application Process

    Applications are submitted online through the official IMPRS-SPCE application system. Candidates are expected to prepare a strong academic application demonstrating their research interests, academic background, and motivation for doctoral study.

    Location

    The programme is based in Germany, with doctoral training and research activities primarily conducted at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies and partner universities. International research mobility is strongly encouraged.
