    About the Institute for Law & AI Summer Research Fellowship (EU Law) 2026

    The Institute for Law & AI Summer Research Fellowship (EU Law) 2026 is designed for individuals interested in understanding and contributing to the legal and ethical frameworks governing artificial intelligence within the European Union. Hosted in Cambridge, UK, the fellowship combines academic rigor with real-world application, offering participants the opportunity to conduct high-level research under expert mentorship.

    Fellows will engage in research projects, policy analysis, and academic writing related to EU AI regulation and governance. The program is ideal for law graduates, early-career professionals, and researchers seeking to expand their expertise in the legal dimensions of artificial intelligence.


    Benefits of the Fellowship

    Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support throughout the duration of the program. Benefits include:

    • Weekly Stipend: €1,000 per week.
    • In-Person Allowance: An additional €1,000 per week for those attending in person at the Cambridge office (to cover living expenses).
    • Forum Participation: Free admission to the Cambridge Forum on Law and AI, taking place from August 18–23, 2026. Travel, accommodation, and meals are fully covered.
    • Expert Mentorship: Guidance from LawAI research staff and leading experts in AI law and policy.
    • Networking Opportunities: Access to professionals, researchers, and policymakers working in AI governance.
    • Career and Research Support: Assistance in publication, project collaboration, and potential future funding opportunities.

    Programme Duration and Timeline

    The fellowship runs for 10 weeks, from June 29 to September 4, 2026.
    Participants are encouraged to work in person at the Institute’s Cambridge office, with at least one mandatory in-person week (July 6–10, 2026).

    This hybrid structure allows fellows to experience both flexible remote research and collaborative on-site engagement with peers and mentors.


    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants from any country are welcome to apply. The program seeks individuals who demonstrate a strong interest and foundation in EU law and policy. Specific eligibility criteria include:

    • Academic Background: Graduate law students (LLM, JD), PhD candidates, post-graduate researchers, or academics in legal studies.
    • Professional Experience: Early- to mid-career legal professionals with interest or background in AI regulation or policy.
    • Legal Knowledge: Understanding of EU law and principles related to AI governance (prior AI-specific research experience is not required).
    • Commitment: Availability for the full duration of the fellowship and ability to work in person during the mandatory week in Cambridge.
    • Visa Eligibility: Applicants planning to attend in person must have or be able to obtain work authorization or a visa for the UK.

    Fellowship Activities

    During the fellowship, participants will:

    • Conduct full-time research on selected topics under the mentorship of LawAI experts.
    • Develop scholarly outputs such as policy briefs, law review articles, or advisory reports.
    • Present their work to peers and experts during sessions and seminars.
    • Contribute to policy-oriented projects or advisory engagements that may inform future AI governance frameworks in the EU and beyond.
    • Participate in networking and collaboration opportunities, shaping the dialogue on responsible AI regulation.
