About the Fellowship

The International Youth Fellowship (IYF) is designed for recent graduates and young professionals who are passionate about global issues and sustainable development. The program consists of a few weeks of pre-departure training in Canada, followed by an 8-month overseas placement with AKDN partner agencies.

Fellows are placed in one of two specialized streams, depending on their background and interests:

  • International Development Management (IDM): Focused on areas such as health, education, civil society strengthening, and rural development.
  • International Microfinance and Microenterprise (IMM): Centered around microfinance, enterprise development, and market or community development initiatives.

Through these placements, Fellows gain practical experience in project management, organizational development, and community engagement — developing leadership and technical skills essential for global development careers.


Program Duration

The Aga Khan Foundation Canada International Youth Fellowship 2026–2027 runs for approximately nine months:

  • Pre-Departure Training: Conducted in Canada, offering comprehensive orientation and professional preparation.
  • Overseas Placement: Lasts about eight months in a host country in Africa or Asia, with fellows working alongside experienced development professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2026–2027 Fellowship cycle, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be 30 years of age or younger by February 1, 2026.
  • Hold at least an undergraduate university degree.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to international development through professional, volunteer, or academic experiences.
