About the IISS Research Fellow Program 2026

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on strategic themes shaping the Middle East. The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director, IISS–Middle East, and the Senior Fellow for Middle East Policy.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of one of the world’s leading think tanks, engaging in research that influences global discussions on security, energy, and technology policy in the Middle East and its neighbouring regions.


Key Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be expected to:

  • Conduct original, high-quality and independent research on at least one of the following themes:
    • Energy policy and security
    • The intersection of technology and geopolitics
    • Infrastructure and connectivity in the Middle East and its immediate neighbourhood
  • Contribute to IISS analysis across a range of publications and platforms
  • Support IISS’s fundraising activities, advisory services and events
  • Collaborate closely with IISS colleagues across offices, including mentoring and supervising junior researchers

This position demands creativity, intellectual rigour and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to a global audience.


Eligibility and Candidate Profile

The IISS Research Fellow Program 2026 seeks an exceptional candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • A proven track record as an analyst or researcher, ideally within academia, government, journalism or industry
  • In-depth knowledge of the political and security dynamics of the Middle East
  • A strong publishing record in reputable outlets
  • A postgraduate degree in Middle East studies or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience working in a relevant field such as energy, technology, security, or international relations
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in at least one Middle Eastern language
  • Prior experience living and conducting research in the Middle East will be highly regarded
