    IISS Research Fellow Program 2026

    Deadline: November 6, 2025

Are you passionate about Middle East policy, energy security, or the intersection of technology and geopolitics? The IISS Research Fellow Program 2026 offers an exciting opportunity for high-calibre analysts and researchers to join the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Middle East office in Manama, Bahrain. This fellowship is designed for individuals eager to produce cutting-edge research that informs policy and advances understanding of key geopolitical trends.

About the IISS Research Fellow Program 2026

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on strategic themes shaping the Middle East. The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director, IISS–Middle East, and the Senior Fellow for Middle East Policy.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of one of the world’s leading think tanks, engaging in research that influences global discussions on security, energy, and technology policy in the Middle East and its neighbouring regions.

    Key Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be expected to:

    • Conduct original, high-quality and independent research on at least one of the following themes:
      • Energy policy and security
      • The intersection of technology and geopolitics
      • Infrastructure and connectivity in the Middle East and its immediate neighbourhood
    • Contribute to IISS analysis across a range of publications and platforms
    • Support IISS’s fundraising activities, advisory services and events
    • Collaborate closely with IISS colleagues across offices, including mentoring and supervising junior researchers

This position demands creativity, intellectual rigour and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to a global audience.

    Eligibility and Candidate Profile

The IISS Research Fellow Program 2026 seeks an exceptional candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

    • A proven track record as an analyst or researcher, ideally within academia, government, journalism or industry
    • In-depth knowledge of the political and security dynamics of the Middle East
    • A strong publishing record in reputable outlets
    • A postgraduate degree in Middle East studies or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
    • Demonstrated experience working in a relevant field such as energy, technology, security, or international relations
    • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
    • Proficiency in at least one Middle Eastern language
    • Prior experience living and conducting research in the Middle East will be highly regarded

Applicants should be intellectually curious, detail-oriented, and able to engage with policymakers, academics and media professionals.

    Benefits

The position offers a competitive salary, commensurate with the applicant’s skills and experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package. The successful candidate will also have access to the IISS’s global research network, events, and publications — providing an unparalleled platform for policy influence and professional growth.

    Application Process

Interested applicants should prepare the following documents:

    • A CV, including a full list of publications
    • Two relevant writing samples demonstrating analytical and research capability
    • A cover letter detailing motivation, research interests, and suitability for the role

    Application Deadline

    6 November 2025

Applications must be submitted online through the official IISS portal before the closing date.

Important Tips for Applicants (Especially from Africa and Nigeria)

For professionals and researchers based in Nigeria or across Africa, this is a valuable opportunity to expand your international research profile:

    • Highlight any regional experience or research focus that connects Africa and the Middle East.
    • Emphasise multilingual abilities — English plus any Middle Eastern language will strengthen your application.
    • Showcase previously published works, policy papers or reports that align with Middle East geopolitics, infrastructure, energy, or technology.
    • Demonstrate how your expertise can contribute to IISS’s research agenda and global policy dialogue.

    Location

    Manama, Bahrain
Successful candidates should be prepared to relocate to Bahrain for the duration of the fellowship. The IISS will provide guidance on relocation and work authorisation.
