    Deadline: February 3, 2025

Are you passionate about human rights law and ready to showcase your legal research skills on a global platform? The American University Human Rights Essay Award 2026 offers an exceptional opportunity for legal professionals and scholars to gain international recognition, win a full scholarship to a prestigious programme, and have their work published in a top law review.

This annual competition is hosted by the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University, Washington College of Law. It recognises outstanding academic legal writing on selected human rights themes and attracts participants from all over the world.

About the American University Human Rights Essay Award 2026

The American University Human Rights Essay Award 2026 is a distinguished international essay competition in international human rights law. Each year, the Academy selects a specific theme, and participants are required to submit legal academic articles that critically explore that theme.

For the 2026 edition, the official theme is:

“The right to protest under international human rights law: legal protection and challenges ahead.”

Essays must directly address this theme or a clearly defined subtopic. Submissions that do not align with the theme will be automatically disqualified.

The competition encourages a broad understanding of international human rights law, encompassing international humanitarian law and international criminal law as relevant fields of analysis.

    Award Benefits

Winners of the American University Human Rights Essay Award 2026 will receive:

    • 📝 Two awards — one for the best article in English, and one for the best article in Spanish.
    • 🎓 A full tuition scholarship to attend the Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University (Diploma or Certificate of Attendance).
    • 📰 Publication opportunities in the prestigious American University International Law Review for the two winning articles and up to four honourable mentions.

Note: The award covers tuition fees only. Travel, accommodation, and daily expenses are not included.

    Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the American University Human Rights Essay Award 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a law degree (J.D., LL.B., or equivalent).
    • Demonstrate experience or a clear interest in international human rights law.
    • Submit a legal academic article with proper citations and references that comply with recognised legal citation styles.
    • Essays may be submitted in English or Spanish.

    Important Dates

    • 📝 Submission deadline: 3 February 2026

Early preparation is highly recommended to allow sufficient time for research, drafting, and peer review.

Theme Guidance and Tips for Applicants

To stand out in the competition, it’s essential to adopt a focused and strategic approach to your essay. Here are a few tips:

    1. Narrow Your Focus

Choose a specific legal issue under the theme of the right to protest. Examples include:

    • State obligations and legal limitations
    • Digital protests and online assembly rights
    • Comparative legal approaches across jurisdictions
    • International bodies’ roles in protecting the right to protest

    2. Emphasise Legal Rigor

Support your arguments with treaties, conventions, case law, and scholarly sources. Engage with recent jurisprudence to demonstrate awareness of contemporary challenges.

    3. Provide Original Insight

Offer critical analysis, legal critique, or innovative proposals. Avoid mere summaries of existing debates—contribute your perspective to ongoing legal conversations.

    4. Follow Academic Structure

Organise your essay clearly with an introduction, literature review, legal analysis, and conclusion. Use accurate citations following a recognised legal style (e.g., Bluebook or OSCOLA).

    5. Language Options

If proficient, consider submitting in Spanish. This may offer a strategic advantage due to potentially lower competition. However, ensure your Spanish submission maintains the same academic rigour.

    How to Apply

Applications must be submitted through the official platform by the deadline. Carefully review all guidelines to ensure your essay meets the eligibility and thematic requirements.
