The Mountain Future Award 2025 is now open for applications! Organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Mountain Partnership, the award recognises transformative and innovative projects that strengthen sustainable economies, preserve glaciers, and build resilient livelihoods in mountain regions.
This prestigious initiative is tied to International Mountain Day 2025 and the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, highlighting the urgent need for innovative responses to climate change in vulnerable highland communities.
About the Mountain Future Award 2025
The Mountain Future Award 2025 aims to support individuals and organisations with promising ideas to address glacier-related challenges, improve agrifood systems, and safeguard the resilience of mountain ecosystems and people.
It offers visibility, recognition, and financial support for projects that have the potential to drive real change in mountain regions across the globe.

- Application Deadline: 31 October 2025
- Selection of Winners: Mid-November 2025
- Award Ceremony: December 2025 during International Mountain Day celebrations
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an individual (18+), institution, or established organisation.
- Be the original creator of the proposed idea or project.
- Submit a project that is new, in planning, pilot, or early implementation phase (fully implemented projects are not eligible).
- Project must operate in or directly benefit mountain regions.
- AI-assisted content is allowed, but fully AI-generated proposals will not be accepted.
Award Categories
The Mountain Future Award 2025 recognises projects under three main categories:
- Innovation
- Projects that bring technological, digital, social, financial, institutional, or policy-based innovations to mountain development.
- Adaptation and/or Mitigation
- Projects addressing glacier-related challenges through sustainable water management, nature-based solutions, agrifood system innovation, or indigenous knowledge practices.
- Youth
- Projects led by or focused on young people, empowering them to drive change in their communities.
Priority Areas of Focus
Applicants are encouraged to submit projects in the following thematic areas:
- Glacier preservation and glacier-related challenges
- Sustainable water management
- Agrifood systems and food security in mountain areas
- Nature-based approaches to climate resilience
- Livelihoods and resilience of mountain communities
Benefits for Winners
Winners of the Mountain Future Award 2025 will receive:
- Cash prize to support implementation of the winning project.
- International recognition and visibility through FAO and Mountain Partnership platforms, including media and social media outreach.
- Follow-up support and engagement with the Mountain Partnership Secretariat to monitor and strengthen project progress.
