    WWF Gustavo Fonseca Leadership Program 2026–2027

    The WWF Gustavo Fonseca Leadership Program 2026–2027 is now accepting applications from conservation leaders across Latin America. Organised by WWF’s Russell E. Train Education for Nature (EFN) programme in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this fellowship aims to strengthen the capacity of emerging conservation professionals through graduate-level education and applied research.

    With a strong emphasis on practical, community-driven conservation solutions, the programme seeks to empower the next generation of leaders addressing biodiversity challenges in Latin America.

    About the WWF Gustavo Fonseca Leadership Program 2026–2027

    This prestigious fellowship is designed to support master’s and PhD students whose research focuses on real-world conservation issues. The programme promotes approaches that integrate ecological, social, and economic dimensions while ensuring active engagement with local communities and recognition of Indigenous knowledge systems.

    The initiative continues the legacy of Dr Gustavo Fonseca, a renowned conservationist and former GEF Director of Programs, by investing in leaders who will shape the future of conservation in Latin America.


    Funding Support

    • Grant Amount: Up to US $30,000 per year
    • Duration: Up to 2 years for master’s students, or 3 years for PhD students

    This funding can be used to cover tuition fees, research expenses, living costs, and other academic-related expenditures.


    Eligibility Criteria

    To qualify for the programme, applicants must:

    • Be nationals of one of the eligible Latin American countries:
      Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, or Suriname.
    • Have at least 2 years of work or research experience in a conservation-related field.
    • Be enrolled in, admitted to, or have applied to a master’s or PhD programme (locally, regionally, or abroad).
    • Plan to begin studies no later than January 2027.
    • Not be a WWF or GEF staff member/consultant (unless eligibility is confirmed by EFN).
    • Past EFN fellowship recipients should confirm their eligibility with EFN before applying.

    Focus Areas

    Applicants are encouraged to propose research that:

    • Addresses pressing conservation challenges in their home country or region.
    • Promotes innovative and applied solutions that bridge science, policy, and practice.
    • Demonstrates collaboration with local communities and integrates Indigenous knowledge.
    • Contributes to building sustainable conservation leadership in Latin America.

    Applications are submitted online through the WWF EFN portal. Before applying, candidates should prepare their research proposals and ensure they meet the programme’s requirements.
