    The National Geographic Society Ocean Exploration & Discovery 2025 call for proposals is now open. This unique opportunity, launched in partnership with the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI), is designed to empower early-career scientists to lead innovative marine research projects.     About the Ocean Exploration & Discovery 2025 Programme

    The initiative is jointly issued by the National Geographic Society and the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI). It aims to foster the next generation of marine scientists by providing them with resources, mentorship, and access to world-class oceanographic infrastructure.

    Selected applicants will:

    • Receive grants of up to $20,000 USD to support travel and project-related costs.
    • Secure a berth on the Falkor (too) research vessel during its 2026 expedition along the east coast of South America.
    • Benefit from the ship’s advanced laboratories, underwater robots and cameras, high-performance computing systems, and marine technology platforms.
    • Join the National Geographic Explorer community, unlocking opportunities for collaboration, training, and long-term career development.

    Focus Areas

    The programme welcomes proposals in a range of marine science disciplines, including but not limited to:

    • Biogeochemistry
    • Mid-water biodiversity
    • Physical oceanography
    • Mesophotic ecosystems

    • Open to early-career scientists working in marine sciences.
