National Geographic Society Extreme Weather and Natural Hazards Solutions 2025

    Deadline: September 19, 2025

The National Geographic Society Extreme Weather and Natural Hazards Solutions 2025 Request for Proposals (RFP) is now open. This programme supports innovative, science-based projects designed to tackle the growing global challenges of extreme weather events and natural hazards. With grants of up to $50,000 USD, selected projects will focus on strengthening resilience for both human communities and nature.

    About the Programme

Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and intensity, posing significant threats to societies and ecosystems worldwide. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2025, extreme weather ranks second overall among global risks and first among environmental threats. In 2024 alone, natural disasters caused more than $320 billion in losses, with over 20 million people displaced annually in recent years.

In response, the National Geographic Society has launched the Extreme Weather and Natural Hazards Solutions 2025 programme to support pioneering approaches that can mitigate impacts, enhance preparedness, and build long-term resilience.

    Grant Details

    • Deadline: 19 September 2025
    • Funding Amount: Up to $50,000 USD per project
    • Duration: Projects must be completed within two years
    • Discipline: Primary focus on Science

    Focus Areas

Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals under one or more of the following priority areas:

    1. Extreme Weather Field Research

Projects that collect in-situ meteorological and environmental data to inform rapid response, adaptation, modelling, and prediction.

    2. Nature-Based Solutions

Initiatives that conserve, protect, or restore ecosystems that naturally reduce risks from extreme weather and hazards.

    3. Technological Solutions

Use of emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles, AI, and other innovations to improve forecasting, monitoring, and response capabilities.

    4. Developing and Strengthening Local-Level Strategies

Community-led approaches that create tools, strategies, and systems to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery tailored to local needs.
