    The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026 is now open for applications. This prestigious programme offers mid-level professionals from developing States a unique opportunity to deepen their expertise in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, equipping them with the tools to craft and implement effective ocean governance policies aligned with UNCLOS and SDG-14.

    About the Fellowship

    The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship is designed to provide advanced training in the fields of ocean affairs and the law of the sea. Through a combination of academic research, professional development, and hands-on exposure at the United Nations, fellows acquire the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to sustainable ocean governance in their home countries.

    The programme is fully funded and lasts for nine months, divided into two structured phases:

    • Phase One: 3 months at the United Nations Headquarters (DOALOS), New York – from mid-March to June 2026.
    • Phase Two: 6 months at a Host Institution of choice – from July to December 2026.

    • Academic Qualification: Hold at least a first-level university degree or its equivalent.
    • Nationality: Must be from a developing State.
    • Professional Status: Mid-level government official or professional directly involved in ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
    • Availability: Must commit to the full 9-month programme without other professional obligations during the fellowship period.

    Application Deadline and Timeline

    • Application Deadline: 14 September 2025.
    • Notification of Results: Around December 2025.
    • Fellowship Duration: March – December 2026.

    How to Apply

    Applicants must submit a complete application package to the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS). The package includes:

    1. Completed application form.
    2. Nomination/recommendation form.
    3. Copy of passport biodata page.

    Only fully completed applications received by 14 September 2025 will be considered.
