    The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center Fellowships 2026–2027 present a unique opportunity for scholars, creative writers, journalists, translators, and visual artists to engage in dedicated research and creative work at the iconic New York Public Library. With access to one of the richest collections in the world and a generous stipend, this fellowship is designed to support outstanding individuals whose work will benefit from the resources available at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.


    About the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center Fellowships

    Established to foster creativity, research, and innovation across disciplines, the Cullman Center Fellowships bring together a diverse cohort of academics, writers, and artists from around the world. Each year, 15 fellows are selected to spend nine months at the New York Public Library, working intensively on their projects while engaging in cross-disciplinary exchange with peers.

    The fellowship promotes intellectual diversity and inclusivity, welcoming applications from a wide range of fields and backgrounds.


    Fellowship Benefits

    Successful fellows will receive:

    • A stipend of $90,000 for the full fellowship term.
    • An office with a computer in the Cullman Center at the New York Public Library.
    • Access to the Library’s physical and electronic collections, including special research collections.

    Fellowship Term

    • Start Date: September 8, 2026
    • End Date: May 28, 2027
    • Duration: Nine months (full-time, on-site)

    Fellows are required to work on-site, Monday to Friday, and are expected to make the Cullman Center their primary base during the fellowship. Absences are limited and degree-related research (such as dissertations) is not eligible.


    Eligibility Criteria

    The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center Fellowships 2026–2027 are open to:

    • Academics and independent scholars
    • Journalists
    • Creative writers – including novelists, playwrights, and poets
    • Translators
    • Visual artists

    Applicants must propose a project that directly benefits from the New York Public Library’s collections. The fellowship is not open to those pursuing degree-related research.


    Application Requirements

    Applicants must submit:

    • A detailed research proposal describing the project and its connection to the Library’s resources.
    • A curriculum vitae (CV).
    • Letters of recommendation.
    • A sample of creative work, writing, or artwork, as applicable to the discipline.
