    Are you a post-doctoral researcher in the Humanities, Social Sciences, or Arts looking to explore Asia’s global connections through an interdisciplinary lens? The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship Programme 2026-2027 is now open for applications!

    Hosted by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden, the Netherlands, this prestigious 12-month residential fellowship supports innovative scholars conducting research on Asian studies within a global context.


    Fellowship Overview

    The IIAS Asia in the World Fellowship Programme 2026-2027 runs from September 2026 to August 2027 and offers a vibrant research environment in Leiden. Fellows will gain access to IIAS’s rich scholarly resources, engage in collaborative projects, and connect with international experts in Asian studies.

    Fellows are expected to reside in the Netherlands for at least 90% of the duration, contributing actively to the academic community.


    Who Can Apply?

    This fellowship welcomes:

    • Post-doctoral researchers in the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences.
    • Scholars with a completed PhD by the application deadline or those set to complete it within five months (with institutional proof).
    • Applicants working on interdisciplinary or collaborative research related to Asia’s global entanglements.
    • Joint applicants (duo researchers) submitting individual applications tied to the same project title—roles must be clearly defined.

    What’s Included?

    Selected fellows will benefit from:

    • A 12-month residential research stay in Leiden, Netherlands.
    • Access to IIAS facilities: workstations, seminar rooms, libraries, and media tools.
    • Full engagement with the IIAS academic ecosystem, including talks, workshops, and collaborative events.
    • The opportunity to organise group activities such as study circles, screenings, and exhibitions.
    • An optional two-month extension at FMSH in Paris for a combined IIAS-FMSH fellowship (based on selection).

    Fellowship Conditions

    • Fellows must reside in the Netherlands during the tenure (90% minimum physical presence).
    • Concurrent employment or other fellowships are not permitted.
    • All research outputs should acknowledge IIAS support.
    • Applicants must demonstrate academic integrity and adhere to high ethical research standards.

    Application Components

    To apply, candidates must submit the following:

    • Completed online application form
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • List of publications
    • Proposed work plan (project description)
    • Reference letters (required only if shortlisted)
    • Video submission (upon shortlisting – instructions will be provided)

    Important file guidelines:

    • Each document should not exceed 4 MB.
    • File naming convention: FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_FILENAME.pdf
