GHHIN/EJN Extreme Heat Photo Contest 2025

    Deadline: August 29, 2025

The GHHIN/EJN Extreme Heat Photo Contest 2025 is now open for entries! This powerful initiative by the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) in partnership with the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) invites global photographers and storytellers to spotlight the human, environmental, and infrastructural toll of extreme heat—while celebrating stories of resilience and adaptation.

If you’re a visual storyteller passionate about climate, health, or justice, this contest is your chance to bring hidden heat impacts to light and influence public perception and policy.

About the GHHIN/EJN Extreme Heat Photo Contest 2025

The GHHIN/EJN Extreme Heat Photo Contest 2025 aims to raise awareness about the often-overlooked dangers of extreme heat. Participants are encouraged to submit striking images that highlight:

    • The effects of heat on people and public health
    • Damage to infrastructure and economic systems
    • Environmental and animal distress due to heatwaves
    • Innovative and grassroots heat resilience strategies

Through this photo contest, GHHIN and EJN hope to visualise the reality of global warming and empower individuals and communities to act.

    Contest Categories

Participants can submit entries under the following four categories:

    1. Heat Impacts on Human Health
    2. Heat Impacts on Infrastructure & the Economy
    3. Heat Impacts on the Environment & Animals
    4. Heat Resilience Strategies

Sample submissions could include imagery of agricultural losses, sun-exposed workers, water scarcity, community cooling centres, tree planting drives, or urban design adaptations.

    Recognition and Prizes

While the contest does not offer monetary rewards, selected winners will receive high-visibility recognition and professional development opportunities, including:

    • A photojournalism masterclass with world-class photographer Nicola Vigilanti
    • Publication in a curated EJN heat-risk photo essay
    • Showcasing in global UN events addressing climate and health
    • A certificate of recognition from GHHIN
    • Promotion through GHHIN, EJN, and UN digital platforms

    📅 Key Dates and Eligibility

    • Eligibility: Open to global participants aged 18 and above
    • Exclusions: Employees or contractors of GHHIN, WMO, or contest partners are not eligible

      • Location
      • Brief caption/description
    • Ensure consent from any identifiable individuals in the photo

    • Clarity of message

    • Photographic aesthetics and composition
    • Impact and emotional resonance

The panel will look for visual stories that evoke empathy, spark dialogue, and elevate understanding of heat-related challenges.

    • Champion solutions and resilience
    • Connect with a network of climate-conscious journalists and experts
