    The Ken Saro-Wiwa International Writers’ Residency 2025 is now open for applications. This highly esteemed programme provides African writers with a unique opportunity to nurture their creativity, deepen their craft, and engage in cultural exchange in a supportive literary environment. Named after the late Nigerian writer and activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, the residency honours his legacy by promoting literary excellence and activism across the African continent.

    If you are an emerging or established writer in Africa, this fully-funded residency offers everything you need to develop your manuscript in peace and collaboration.


    About the Ken Saro-Wiwa International Writers’ Residency 2025

    Launched by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), the Ken Saro-Wiwa International Writers’ Residency 2025 is hosted at the serene Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village in Abuja, Nigeria. The residency runs from August 30 to October 11, 2025, with a possible two-week extension at the participant’s own cost.

    This programme is designed to bring together talented writers from across Africa for four weeks of focused writing, mentorship, and literary exchange, while honouring Ken Saro-Wiwa’s enduring influence on African literature and human rights advocacy.


    Who Can Apply?

    To be eligible for the Ken Saro-Wiwa International Writers’ Residency 2025, applicants must:

    • Be creative writers based in Africa, working in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or literary criticism.
    • Have at least one published work, either a book or pieces published in reputable literary platforms.
    • Be able to commit to the full 4-week residency period (August 30 – October 11, 2025).
    • Be willing to engage in community literary activities and mentorship during the residency.

    Benefits of the Residency

    Selected participants will receive a generous support package, including:

    • A ₦15,000 weekly stipend for the 4-week residency.
    • A transport allowance of ₦100,000 for Nigerian residents and ₦200,000 for international (African) participants.
    • Free accommodation and full access to the writing and recreational facilities at the Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village.
    • Opportunities to network, collaborate and receive guidance from established writers across Africa.

    Application Requirements

    Interested writers must submit the following as a single PDF file (labelled SURNAME_FIRSTNAME_GENRE):

    1. Two-page résumé, including your publication history.
    2. 500–750-word writing sample, or five poems (for poets).
    3. 500-word statement of purpose, outlining what you hope to achieve during the residency.
    4. One-page literary profile or portfolio.
    5. Two referral letters:
      • Nigerian applicants: one from your ANA State Chapter Chair and one from a notable Nigerian writer.
      • Non-Nigerian African applicants: one from PAWA Secretary-General and one from a recognised Nigerian writer.
    6. Proof of African nationality and current residence.

    All applications should be submitted by email to anaksarowiwaintlresidency@gmail.com no later than July 12, 2025.
